Are there other movies with this type of endings?

I love how the ending was realistic and brought tears to your eyes, but it still ended happily (to me anyways).

Does anyone know of other movies with this sort of ending?

The Bodyguard with Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner is one.

Lost in Translation. They meet and have a brief romance and split the next day. I assume that's the kind of ending you are referring to.

Yes..I was going to mention LIT. If you liked Roman Holiday, you will like that movie.

I would also add Casablanca and An Affair to Remember.

"If you liked Roman Holiday, you will like that movie."

Uhhh for me Lost in Translation- most definitely NOT!! Casablanca is more like it. LIT had none of the sparkle and magic of Roman Holiday. One could say all three films shared bittersweet endings but LIT was just a dour viewing exercise to me.

I agree with turtletommy; definitely not Lost in Translation. While Roman Holiday is my all-time favorite film, I found LiT the most boring film of all times. I'm serious. I'm sure Coppola wouldn't have found a distributor for it if it weren't for Scarlett appearing in her panties.

I never make mistakes. Once I thought I did, but I was wrong.

Thanks. Two other posters lumping LiT with Roman Holiday in any way.... what is the world coming to? (-:

Eh Scarlett doesn't do much for me but what the hey... I musta been still dozing off and missed that scene anyway.

reply

Yeah, God forbid people disagree with you.

And Lost in Translation is a brilliant film.

Before Sunrise - two strangers meet on a train, explore after hours Vienna together, forge a connection and part in the morning. Before Sunset sees them meeting nine years later in Paris (although the ending to this is ambigious - they may or may not have stayed together).

Edward may be a drop-dead gorgeous vampire but he doesn't compare to Harry!

What about Shakespeare in Love or My Best Friend´s Wedding... ?

Once has an ending very much like this.

In the most delicious way....

"The Way We Were" has a sad ending. And like in Roman Holiday, both still loved each other but they couldn't be together.

The other movie with Princess, Commoner and with the
same type of ending is Prisoner of Zenda

I'd also recommend "The Heiress" also directed by William Wyler, starring Olivia de Havilland and Monty Clift

I can't remember the end of Wyler's Carrie, but I believed it had a similar ending too. It also features Laurence Olivier's most underrated onscreen performance. Like Roman Holiday it too has Eddie Albert in a supporting role.

I'm sure it can be easily argued that I am brainwashed to like the "hollywood/storybook" ending but I was kind of hoping for an ending where they get together. I definitely had grown to "care" about the characters and was hoping they would get what they wanted. It was sad to see both of them go back to their lives which neither of them really wanted.

Not a big deal at all though.

It ended happily? They didn't even end up together!!!!

Be open-minded, but not so open-minded that your brains fall out.
