Who Portrays the Centurion?

Who is the Centurion Marcellus has the sword fight with immediately after Dean Jagger's character gets killed?

Jeff Morrow plays Paulus. Isn't he excellent? :-)

Not heard of this actor, but no doubt he is a white actor as is the case for the portrayal of all strong or heroic people. It's total discrimination.

So the answer is Jeff Morrow (Paulus)?

Yep!

Jeff is quite well known but somehow when I tried to connect the face, I was drawing blanks. Thanks!

Thanks ivyandstone! I hate to sound cliché but they just don't make-em like that anymore! I think today’s young people are really missing out because they tend to shun anything not of a contemporary nature. When I was a child I watched old movies on TV made before I was born (1955) and quite a few classics were filmed in black-and-white (sometimes intentionally) rather than color. It has been said that 1939 was the single greatest year for films that became classic (Wizard of Oz, Citizen Kane, Gone with the Wind, Wuthering Heights, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, etc.)! You should just see the incredible list of films made that year!

I’ll tell you the name of another great film most people today have never seen. It is called Black Magic (1949) and stars Orson Welles. Ever heard of it? You can’t even get this one on VHS but I tell you it was a great film!

Now for the good news! A restored version of EL CID (1961) has just been released on dvd for the very 1st time (the other dvd versions out there were unsanctioned copies with foreign subtitles.) I will be purchasing my copy within the next week or so. Whether you have seen this one or not you are in for a treat because it was one of the last epics of its type to be made and a truly memorable film! Regardless of some potentially historical inaccuracies, the ending is nothing short of spectacular!!! It’s an interesting commentary on Christian/Muslim relations especially considering the political climate we live in today.

I was born in 1965, so by the time I was old enough to appreciate anything other than Bugs Bunny and Sesame Street, the Golden Age of Movies (in my opinion, the 1930s through the mid-1960s, with occasional exceptions) was well past. Is El Cid the one where the last scene is of the dead hero riding off into the sunset, tied onto his horse?

Yep, that's the one! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054847/

I met Jeff and his wife on the occasion of his 80th birthday and we had quite a long conversation, mostly about international travel. He was a quite cultured and pleasant man. Jeff started as a film actor quite late in life, with this being his first film when he was already in his mid-40's.

I have no good reason and suspect that monkeys possess some sort of soul. Geode

Jeff Morrow is absolutely great in this film. But, he may be more familiar as Exeter, the chief alien in "This Island Earth." In this film, all the space travelers had HUGE bulging foreheads, pure white hair, and names like "Brak" and "Exeter". None of the humans noticed this or thought it odd! When Dan Akcroyd saw this film he thought this was hilarious, and was inspired to create "the Coneheads" who claimed to be "from Remulak, a small town in France." No one ever thinks that the Coneheads look strange or think that it's odd that they give out beer and "Scorched chicken embryos" to Halloween Trick or Treaters....
