I had the first DVD of the film, and a friend of mine recently picked up the "Special Edition." (The one with the shadow of the cross falling across the crimson cloth on the cover.) Among the bonus features listed on the back of the box is a featurette called THE CINEMASCOPE STORY, yet that short is nowhere to be found on the DVD. What happened?
shareThat featurette was shown in theatres in 1953 before The Robe was shown. I have never seen it since. Hopefully, it wasn't destroyed and still exists. I have an older DVD with the regular painting on the cover and the film was not restored and contains many dirt marks so I am skeptical of purchasing the deluxe DVD. There was also a featurette shown on TV about 20 years ago, it showed the premiere of The Robe with all the stars in attendance. That short, I never saw again.
share20th Century-Fox made an error (unless it was deliberately misleading) by listing that featurette among the supplemental material for the standard DVD. I've been told the short actually appears only on the Blu-Ray edition.
