Tyrone Power or Errol Flynn would've been much better

I think Tyrone Power would've been way better as Marcellus. I even think Errol Flynn would've made a great Marcellus. I thought Richard Burton was good, but he did overact in a lot of scenes. Especially when he's yelling lol. It's actually comical when he starts yelling in the one scene on the ship when he has the nightmare.

Burton's performance wasn't good but Flynn would have been too old in 1953 and Power didn't want to make the film.

reply

Yeah, Flynn did age pretty fast and Tyrone Power turned it down to do something else. But I wish Power did it. He was their first choice. He would've been so much better. Richard Burton didn't like doing the movie and his performance wasn't that good.

reply

Burton never had any training, although he was certainly a graduate of the shouting school of acting.

reply

Yeah, I noticed the yelling myself. Remember the scene when he's on the ship and he comes out yelling, "Stop it! Why don't you stop it!" I always laugh when I see that scene lol. Even the scene when he finds the robe and wants to burn it he is yelling. Remember that scene? Talk about overacting.

After watching The Robe this year I got to like Richard Burton a little more. It is one of my all time favorite movies and Richard Burton was decent I guess.

I have always liked Burton in the film, and to be honest I never cared for Tyrone Power in much of anything. For a supposedly verile leading man he always came off swishy to me. Flynn was clearly too old but would have been good for the role in his prime.

Everyone seems to want to criticize Burton for the scenes where he is taken as others as possessed or crazy. If you think about it crazy people often act "over the top" and I don't dislike the way he plays these scenes. As a final point Burton had a better voice than the other two and uses it well in this film as well as in others, especially in the final scenes.

I have no good reason and suspect that monkeys possess some sort of soul. Geode

I could've definitely seen Errol Flynn. Especially in the sword fight scenes.

reply

I am not sure about that. Some of the scenes Burton had to do, in less capable hands would be completely ludicrous (like when he is trying to burn the robe). If you ask me, Flynn and Power despite being charismatic movie-stars, weren't half as good actors than Richard Burton.

reply

Most actors are better than Burton.

Burton was a newcomer to Hollywood and was still finding his way when he did The Robe. He became a much better movie actor after in the years after this film, despite his Old Vic training in London.

Fast-forward another ten years or so, to his performance in Night of the Iguana, and you'll see a major talent at work.
