Exeter is Paulus!
The versatile Jeff Morrow is thoroughly convincing as centurian Paulus, just as he was convincing as the alien Exeter in This Island Earth. Every time I compare the two roles, I am filled with admiration for Jeff.
shareI completely agree with you. Two very different characters, and he excelled as both of them. Paulus was so earthy and physical, and Exeter was so....not.
shareJeff's voice was so different in this film that I did not even realize he was in the movie. I call that acting! I must admit that I sometimes confuse him with Jeff Chandler.

shareFar as I know there was never any hint that he was gay (sigh, "Not that there's anything wrong with that!"), but there WAS a rumor that he was a cross-dresser. I believe a rumor was the start & end of it, but that's one of the problems with rumors -- people remember them, but not their retractions.
I NEVER read anything like that about Jeff Morrow though.
I found an old interview where he said that one of the main things he remembered about a movie he shot in Ireland, was how upsetting it was for him to see people, children especially, begging in the streets. Now that's a man with a kind & gentle heart. :-)
Most of the guys I know would be enthusing about what great bars & hot women they found over there. Which is okay, I suppose, I just happen to admire men who have a little more on their minds than beer & broads, exclusively.
The business about Chandler dressing in women's clothes came with the publication of a book by his ex-wife, or lover (I think it was Esther Williams, though I'm not sure). He did it in private I think she said. But . . . who knows about such things? Later, she retracted the allegation.
