sharei's 1950s religious Hollywood entertainment, Sunday afternoon tv fare. Burton's good, Jean Simmons is wholesome, Jay Robinson is a treat as Caligula, it's quite fun in a reverential kind of way. Bit more serious than the classic Italian sword and sandals films, decent production values too.
shareIt's pretty good yes. Burton's a block of wood save for the finale scene where he gets to do his Mark Antony impression, Simmons is a beaut, Jay Robinson is AWFUL--Snidely Whiplash--Victor Mature is quite good(!) to be honest. Sword fight w/ Jeff Morrow is good. Richard Boone has cameo as Pilate. It's very fifties and still worth watching.
shareI was surprised too, at how good the sword fight was.
I like how well they spun real history with very little invented for the sake of "the robe". It got me thinking of where the line is between the fact and fiction and who the real emperors were at this time. I like when "Caligula" flips his lid over losing Marcellus. That is his first decent scene in the movie! I bet that is why he was cast too, because of how important that scene was at least thought to be by the writers and director.

The swords are okay, but the sandals are rubbish.
