What is Mogambo?

Perhaps, it's a silly question, but what is Mogambo?
Why was the movie named so?

Many thanks in advance.

I have read that Mogambo is Swahili for passion.

I have no personal knowledge of the language though.

reply

Yes, Mogambo does mean "passion" in Swahili, but as there is no reference in the film to this definition, it leaves the audience in doubt. By the way, if you watch the trailer for the film, it manages to suggest that Mogambo means "the greatest". This would not be correct.

from a Kenya tourism website:

"Mogambo ('Passion' in Swahili) is a lavish remake of the classic film Red Dust (1932) . The earlier movie also featured Clark Gable in the lead role."

Thank you much.

I speak Swahili. Mogambo does not mean anything in Swahili. It could be from one of the tribal dialects.

You may be right, but doing a search for "Mogambo, passion, Swahili" gives a page of references that indicate mogambo does mean passion in Swahili. Does anyone have an English-Swahili dictionary?

Actually it's Swahili for "bad acting".

reply

I wasn't joking Tashtago (unlike you), "Mogambo" really does translate as "Big Gorilla" in Swahili.

It wasn't great acting, was it? Normally, I don't like Ms Garner's roles very much, but I do like Ms Kelly's! In this movie, neither one was very good! Grace Kelly as a ditz?

reply

“Mogambo” means trite, sleazy movie - complete with uninteresting, unappealing lead characters, bad acting all round and the bottom of the barrel of Hollywood “African safari” movies that were prevalent during the early 1950s.

reply

I've read it means nothing too...as in this nothing movie.
