Why did Ford (re) make this??
I mean, the landscape is not really picturesque, the characters aren't archetypes, the romances hold no charm, Ward Bond isn't in it.....

shareBecause the studio told him to? Studios like MGM in the 1950s were trying to recapture the glory days of the 1930s. Think of how many 1930s films were remade in Technicolor in the 1950s: Red Dust was remade as Mogambo, The Women remade as The Opposite Sex, Gone With the Wind into Raintree County (not exactly a remake but really, come on: a "sweeping Southern epic" starring an actress that's practically a physical reincarnation of Vivian Leigh!), Ninotchka into Silk Stocking, etc, etc. I guess Ford was roped into it. I have to say, I think that Mogambo was one of the better ones.
Fiddle-dee-dee!
Ford made it because Gable was still a huge box office draw and he also had Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly ready to star with him. These weren't chopped liver actresses. They were the real deal. And there will never be another Clark Gable. Why not?
Actors are mere products of a good writer's imagination
