Why did Kelly go back to Vic?

I don't understand..she obviously saw that Vic would rather have the blonde girl over her. Vic actively ignored Kelly while the other girl was there!

If she had gone back home, Kelly probably would have been swarmed by tons of sexy guys who would have fully appreciated her...unlike Vic.

Anyone else peeved about the ending?

reply

Your point about the ending is well taken. Of course, we don't know how much time has gone by since the tent scene, so Vic and Kelly may have reconnected, but the ending seems "Hollywoodish" for want of a better word.

"Kelly probably would have been swarmed"

Perhaps. But what she reveals about her past life indicates that the guys doing the swarming were no prizes and not what she wanted.

Better question is why in the world you would give away the ending in the title of a thread???

Well...they could take it as why did Grace Kelly go back to Vic? People mix up character names and actor names all the time on IMDb.

"...It is a ever-fixed mark that looks on tempests and is never shaken..."

reply

^agreed. I was just about to post that the OP obviously didn't watch the full movie because Grace didn't stay.

"The only exercise I take is walking behind the coffins of friends who took exercise."

reply

The OP did watch the full movie, and never said that Grace stayed. "Kelly," in this instance, was Gardner's character's surname. Her full name was Eloise Y. Kelly.

I agree, it really seems that they wanted to force a happy ending with a marriage at the end. The line about going to the mission to have the priest marry them also seemed stuck in out of the blue to meet decency standards. And if she is going to stay, why have her get on the boat and then jump into the river to swim back to him. That also came across as corny and forced. Finally, why is somebody reading the message boards on IMDB if they are going to get upset when they find information about the ending.

reply

I agree - it makes her appear desperate, and she would have no shortage of suitors.

reply

it was explained in her soul baring conversation with Brownie - after telling him of her brief & blissful marriage to a pilot killed over Berlin - Brownie said "But you'd know it if you met it again" - implying that her fling with Vic told her that this was it

Kelly was caught up in those obsessive attractions - it happens - frequently - so much so - that many stories are based on an unrequited love - this is merely one more

yes - Ava's character would never had to worry about attracting men - too bad she found her choice in an aging carcass in the middle of africa - <sarcasm> of course - we all know - that a bad boy can be tamed by the right woman </sarcasm>

reply

He was Clark Gable. You always go back to Clark Gable...even if you're Ava Gardner.

Actors are mere products of a good writer's imagination

reply

I got the impression that this WAS requitted between Ava Gardner and Clark gable?

reply

Yes. The ending is terrible! She should have stuck to her instincts and stayed in the boat. Vic is clearly a s**t and she would have done better to go back home. I couldn't believe she jumped out of the boat in the end. Up to that point she was an impressive character.

reply

Sadly, she was hardly impressive. She let him kick her around a lot. That can happen with love but, her end choice was not impressive.

reply

She should have dumped him.
