I get the macho thing but gosh ... eww. CG was old, fat in those mom pants and not attractive at all.
It's hard to believe the pairing of a CG with the likes of Grace Kelly and Ava Gardner except if we take in consideration that they were playing stupid damsels in distress, desperate for a man and they didn't have much option.
I never understood the appeal of Clark Gable. I thought he was far too old to play romantic leads, even in " Gone with the Wind."

Really? He was only 38 when the movie came out and younger than that when they were filming it. And the film's timeline was 12 years.
He was definitely more attractive when he was younger but I'd say he aged pretty well and he had a lot of charisma. In the context of him being probably the best guy around in the safari and them all being trapped together for quite some time, it makes maybe more sense that the love triangle would develop than if they were back in society and could stay away from each other and meet other people.
The attraction of Gable goes FAR beyond his looks. Gable was always, and remained an actor that oozed masculinity, virility and charm. I suppose you have to be a woman to "get it," that is, a straight woman, I have been told. Being a man, I can only say I find him mesmerizing from the point of view of the command he respects on the screen, a screen "presence" unlike any in film history.
If you don't "get it," you never will.
I have wondered the same as well. I can understand Paul Newman, Marlon Brando, Sidney Poitier, Gary Cooper ect appeal. He looked like any guy you could find on the street "charms" and all.
