I read on my Cinemania 97' CD-Rom that this great film was originally released in a version that ran 192 minutes. Was this for the original German release, or is it even available anywhere now?
I'm not expecting to get a reply for at least a year, so there's really no rush.

let us wit for the release of this great film on dvd from criterion. all of thier releases are director's cuts,hence, when they release this movie, we'll know if it really runs for 192 minutes, and i've been e mailing criterion for the release of this film and i hope that im not the only one, so that theyll finally listen but if you do know criterion, expect that they will do so since this movie definitely belongs to their vision.

The 2 volume George Sadoul dictionary of films and filmakers gives 192 minutes as the running time for this film. It makes no comments about the film being cut. At the moment I cant lay my hands on a slim BFI pamphlet on Ophuls which may throw some light on this topic.

It felt longer than that but the version I saw was actually less than two hours long.

According to Alain Jessua who was third assistant and discusses the film in an extra on the DVD, a producer, named Deutschmeister, after the producers screening suggested that the duelling scene be cut, which led to the current ending.
