DVD???

I've read that this is quite an important film in Bergman's output, but as far as I know it's never had a DVD release, and it's not included in Tartan's Bergman edition. Can anybody shed any light?

I know what you mean. I've been obsessing over Ingmar Bergman's films for the last year or so, and this is the only one of his films that is reasonably rated and yet not on DVD. I have all of his other movies available in the US, UK & Australia, but haven't been able to find this one. I hope someone brings it out soon... Not very helpul I know, but if I ever find it I'll let you know (please do the same!)

Tartan have just released it on region 2!

This film was shot in standard ratio of 1.33:1, I believe. Plus it is in black and white. There can't be a huge difference between the VHS and the DVD, especially as the VHS transfer was well done, so go rent the VHS. It is not as if it is impossible to see.

I think it is Homevision. I don't remember it as being bad, although I haven't watched it recently. Some television models do cut off the bottom of the screen and make it hard to read the subtitles. I am sure I would have remembered that happening if I had had the same problem. The DVD is certainly going to be better, but if the difference between the two is not full screen vs. wide screen or 16mm. transfer vs. 35mm. transfer or badly deteriorated master vs. restored print, than I personally would go with the cheaper variant. That is just my opinion, but I don't throw out my library of VHS's just because there are now DVD's. Any way, I hope you enjoy the DVD.
