What's so exciting about the name "Lorene?"

When Pvt. Pruitt meets and falls for Donna Reed at the New Congress Club, he becomes even more infatuated when he discovers her name is "Lorene." Later, when he learns her actual name is "Alma," he almost yelps it in disgust.

Why is the name Lorene more intoxicating than Alma to Pruitt (is it more exotic)? You'd think a military man would prefer the latter name since the first name sounds closer to the word "latrine."
