This is the type of film that needs to be remade.
Instead of butchering classics and rehasing stories that everyone is familiar with, Hollywood needs to tackle these lesser-known, but still potentially great films. The basic story is there, it just needs to be looked at from a different perspective and polished up a bit. I'd love to see this adapted as a psychological war film along the lines of Apocalypse Now or even Stanley's own Full Metal Jacket. Could be a very fitting final salute to the legacy of one of the greatest directors ever. Hell, it might even help his reputation by showing that this had all the makings to be a fantastic film. In any case, I'm for an update.
