Pretty suspenseful
I liked this film noir, very suspenseful and well made.
shareYes, it really does make you wonder what to do if ever you would find yourself in a similar situation with Ruth (Jeanne Crain).
Obviously, the Steward and the man with the cane are in cahoots with the maid who arranges the flowers in room (what is it?) B-118? upon Ruth and Jim's (Carl Betz) arrival. She testifies that she never saw them, and the others back her up, saying that her cabin in B-116? because Ruth and Jim's luggage already awaits them, before Jim exits.
The lack of guardrails around the decks presents another problem. Upon their entry and her waving "good-bye" to well-wishers, there are guardrails, but on the gaming deck, when the man with the cane tosses the ring to Ruth, she nearly slips overboard, as well as on the upper deck on the night of the chase.
But, you're right, this is certainly very suspenseful throughout and well-constructed, as well.

Just saw this for the first time, on the Fox Movie Channel.
Great cast, and very suspenseful.
I recommend it highly!
Watched this wonderful movie today on DVD, and what a great little movie it was. It is in fact a "hidden" gem..........I don't remember watching it on TV in my younger days.
Michael Rennie and especially the absolutely attractive Jeanne Crain were magnificent in this lovely Fox film noir gem. I'd go as far as saying Jeanne nearly deserved an Oscar nomination for her role..........she played the part superbly and her acting skills came to the fore here (I don't know how people can question her acting abilities)!! as she completely shone all the way through, and looked so sexy too.
The only downside for me was the slightly "contrived" ending. I know the story of the movie was from a novel, but a slightly more adventurous ending would have given the movie the whole magical 10 stars............but still a very good 8 or 9 out of 10.
