Godzilla 1998

I want to see this movie and haven't yet, so I wanted to ask: Is it a fair assessment to say that the American remake of Godzilla was actually a remake of this movie instead? Because Zilla is only Godzilla in Name Only (or GINO as he's often called). So does he have anything in common with this monster?

The AVGN made that connection as well.

I haven't scene it either, it was a few year before Gojira so it's interesting.

The so-so 1998 film swiped a LOT from this film.

The monster swimming a huge distance to get to NYC, the monster stepping on individuals and eating them , the monster squishing cars, breaking through buildings to avoid gunfire, ....

'98 Zilla didn't eat anyone.

Yeah, the 98 Godzilla was basically a remake of this movie, at least more so than any Godzilla movie.

They share the same purpose. Tokyo Godzilla simply rampages around a lot, seemingly on some sort of vendetta. NY Godzilla and the Rhedosaurus have babies in mind. The professor does note breeding sites, as I recall, though they didn't think to make "Rheddy" asexual. I also think the two are similar because they act like large lizards, not a creature with some sort of grudge. When they break through buildings, they're trying to get away from being attacked. They aren't on the attack~defensive instead of aggressive.

Someone noted one difference: NY Godzilla doesn't eat people. Does the Rhedosaurus eat just one person? I don't recall any others. Maybe that was because the policeman had been shooting at him but was vulnerable at a critical moment. After all, no one gathered fish for HIM to eat.

Maybe with a different title, "Godzilla" wouldn't be disliked so much. I think he's much more like the Rhedosaurus.
