R.I.P. Ray Harryhausen, 1920-2013

Remembering Mr. Harryhausen on the site of his first solo film, and still my favorite of all his astonishing work.

Did he really name the Rhedosaurus using his initials for its first two letters? He said not, but I'd like to believe this wasn't entirely a coincidence...!

Rest in peace, Ray. And thank you for the Beast...and all the rest.

Just dropped by for the same reason. BEAST remains firmly within my All-Time Top Ten (one of only ten films that I rate a ten), and a great big heaping helping of its success is due to Harryhausen's genius.

With CGI running rampant, it's obvious that we'll never see Ray's like again. Steve V.

I agree-the "Beast" was always one of my favorites of Rays' films and one of the reasons I became hooked on movies as a boy. R.I.P. Ray-you will always be fondly remembered!

pencho15 -- I just clicked onto your poll and voted for the rhedosaurus. Apparently I'm the first one to do so. The cyclops from The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad is way ahead, and a good choice.

But I'd quibble about the presence of Mighty Joe Young on the list. Though Harryhausen did most of the animating on the film, under Willis O'Brien's supervision, did he create Joe? I believe O'Brien did -- certainly he shared the credit -- so I don't think the gorilla's a truly legitimate Harryhausen-only creature.
