Here's mine, also in no particular order, its hard enough just to choose 4!!
West Side Story The Wizard of Oz An American in Paris Singin' in the Rain
Tied for fifth were: Sound of Music Chicago Moulin Rouge
Honorable Mentions go to: On the Town White Christmas Holiday Inn My Fair Lady Meet Me in St. Louis Mary Poppins Grease
Note: Unfortunately I have not seen Band Wagon yet :( I am looking forward to buying it though. I also bought the complete Astaire and Rogers collection recently and, once I get the time to see all of those, I am sure some will definitely fit in on the list. There are just too many wonderful musicals though to really narrow it down to 4!!
How could I have known that murder can sometimes smell like honeysuckle?
Surely you must be joking. I'm not the biggest fan of Moulin Rouge, but I do think it deserves the love it's received, and I think Chicago is excellent. I'm always going to prefer Meet Me in St. Louis and On the Town, but I would hardly think anyone is an idiot for liking two such likable musicals as Moulin Rouge and Chicago. These musicals have achieved a sort of "modern classic" status of which they are both worthy.
West Side Story Singing In The Rain The Band Wagon Oliver! Seven Brides For Seven Brothers Carousel A Star Is Born An American In Paris The Sound Of Music Cabaret
Nice try, Old-timer, but "Meet Me in St. Louis" is a far finer film than "Easter Parade." But so is "Top Hat" and "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers." I love "Parade", but it is nowhere near the aforementioned as a classic film.
Hummmm....Off the top of my head my favorites are, and in no order:
Showboat Seven Brides For Seven Brothers The Sound of Music Mary Poppins Oklahoma The Music Man Its Always Fair Weather Chicago The Wizard of Oz
As there are more than four, some need to be tied to fourth. As above if my opinion makes me an idiot (which I always feel is odd when discussing art of any kind) so be it....I don't care for some mentioned above, and some I have not seen, but IMO always its to each there own:)
"Wait. Where are you going? I was going to make Espresso."
Very nice list indeed. But I still do not understand anyone's love of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. It's bright and beautiful and the dancing is really fun, but I just can't seem to get past the sheer hokeyness of it all. Perhaps someone will explain this to me someday :)
Rocky Horror picture show(I love it, feel free to insult me for it)
An American in Paris
That's Entertainment( it's a compilation, I know. But there is a skill to placing clips together so I recognize it as a separate achievement).
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (This Gene Wilder film is often not recognized as a musical but it is and one of my favorites since childhood).
I'm guessing we are only choosing live action musicals only with these list(Fantasia would rank high if we're including anime). And yes, despite my list not being very eclectic I have seen TONS of older musicals. However, the ones I tend to the love the most are the ones i saw as a kid and still love today which is why these are my favorites.
Gee, maybe it's because "Brides" has a great, ORIGINAL film score (rare by 1954), terrific cinematography, a wonderful cast, a hilarious script and superb dancing.
The top 4 movie musicals in no particular order... interesting idea. My choices are based on the choreography:
The Band Wagon (the Central Park sequence at the beginning of "Dancing in the Dark", where Fred lead Cyd into a demi-pirouette, and she followed through coming out of her turn with her right leg fully extended and then took a seat on the bench. There is only one word that properly describes that move: Smooth).
West Side Story (the dance-off at the gym between the Jets and the Sharks. The kinetic call and response is just mesmerizing, and seamlessly transitions to the meeting of Maria and Tony).
Summer Stock (Judy Garland in a man's hat, tuxedo jacket, dancer's trunks, seamed stockings and high heels performing "Come on, Get Happy". Do I need to go on?). And a 4-way tie for the last of the 4 top musicals:
Royal Wedding (Fred Astaire dancing on the ceiling. I don't even want to know how it was done, just let me believe in the magic).
A Damsel in Distress (who can't love Fred Astaire, George Burns and Gracie Allen tap dancing together to "Stiff Upper Lip"? A landmark film for that partnership alone).
Easter Parade (Judy & Fred dancing around and out of his apartment before they head to 5th Avenue to "Easter Parade". Sweetly romantic).
Flying Down to Rio (Fred and Ginger, first pairing: Enough said).
And I think Honorable Mention should go to Funny Face. Though Audrey Hepburn wasn't technically known for her dancing, her "Beat" performance was inspiring, and though she wasn't really dancing, in the strict definition of the term, her descent down that staircase with her holding her head high and that gauzy wrap floating over her head was the classiest thing I have ever seen in a movie.
i'm not sure now having seen all 10 of the astaire-roger movies and several of astaire's other pictures how i could ever choose my top four movie musicals, however if you took all astaire movie musicals out the equation then my top four movie musicals would be
Singin' in the rain An American in Paris Anchors Aweigh Gentlemen Prefer Blondes Easter Parade The Band Wagon Ziegfeld Follies (How amazing was The Babbit and the Bromide??) Phantom of the Opera (2004) The Sound of Music Grease
