why would it be ridiculous, the movie is about a Mexican, and takes place in Mexico (where people speak spanish by the way)

I think he was trying to capture the mannerisms of a Mexican and put a little bit of a Spanish accent to his English. It's a tricky thing to try to capture the impression of another culture without resorting to cliche. Note that most of the rest of the cast does not try to put on a Spanish accent but plays it straight.
I think it works better that way.
He does say "tortilla".
