The Third Secret

I have just finished this very good novel by Steve Berry. Anyone else here read it and what is their opinion on the book?

reply

Just read it. I hope he has a movie deal for it. It is good as a novel of Vatican intrigue.

Michener, the papal secretary -- Liam Neeson, no question
Katerina, the reporter -- my mind keeps picturing Jamie Lee Curtis, possibly because they said she had a short haircut, but I could also see Jane Fonda. They will probably cast Nicole Kidman, which would be a big mistake. Sigourney Weaver, or possibly Susan Sarandon would be all right. Probably not Sandra Bullock, Gina Davis or Charlize Theron.
Jansa, the visionary -- should be played by an unknown
Ngovi, the Camerlengo -- They'll probably cast Samuel L. Jackson, but I would prefer Sidney Poitier. Or maybe Billy Dee Williams? Whoever it is will have to speak with an authentic Kenyan accent in English. They should really get some great Kenyan actor.
Clement XV, the Pope -- Max von Sydow??
Kealy, the Big Deal Publicity Hound -- You know who really ought to play this part is Brad Pitt. He's got the gigantic ego for it.
Speaking of gigantic egoes, I can't think of who should be Valendrea, the evil cleric with designs on the papacy. I wonder about Al Pacino, but am not sure. Also his murderous assistant. Any candidates?
The archivist-cardinal who won't let Valendrea into the Riserva should be a cameo by some really famous "Oh my God, it's ______!" actor, like Chris Lee playing the Magistrate in Sleepy Hollow.
The Blessed Mother should also be played by an unknown, and I think they should find someone who looks like Linda Darnell, because she was the most convincing Virgin Mary I've ever seen.

I think the message of the actual third secret as finally revealed in the book is very unlikely, but I admit I wish it could be something like that.

The third secret was revealed in 2000, in a big public ceremony, at the beatification of Jacinta and Francisco. Lucia was present and affirmed this was really what she wrote. The full text is online at several websites.

The book "The Third Secret" is a suspense/intrigue thriller based on the widespread public controversy about whether the Church honchos released all of it on that day. There is strong suspicion that they did not, based on some things JP2 said and some things Lucia said years before; also, some things Ratzinger has said. I believe they are right -- that there is more to it, but I have just a "wait and see" feeling about it.

The premise of the book is that the visions were real, the third secret is real, and they only revealed pt. 1 of it publicly in 2000. Popes (and a few others) have always known the truth, that there was a pt. 2, and hid it because it would mess up their hierarchy and power structure. Priests investigating it find she's been repeating it almost word for word in nearly all her visitations since the 1840s and the Church has been sweeping it under the rug.

I leave it to you to imagine what the secret is or go read the book, which is a keeper, even though I don't believe the real third secret will turn out to be anything like it.

I'm all right, I'm alllll right!

"Gays will be allowed to marry."

That's why the pope cried!

"Don't call me 'honey', mac."
"Don't call me 'mac'... HONEY!"

I seem to remember hearing somewhere (perhaps via Nostradamus) that the current Pope (Benedict XVI) will be the very last Pope. Anyone know anything about this idea?

reply

Benedict is the next to last on St. Malachy's famous list. He's "from the glory of the olive". He may know about this prophecy. He named himself after St. Benedict who started the Benedictines and their symbol includes an olive branch.

The last pope on the list is Peter the Roman who will take care of the people through many sufferings. After him "the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people."

At Garabandal, visionary Conchita Gonzalez said she heard Mary tell her "after His Holiness Paul VI, there will be only two more popes before the end of the present period (el fin de los tiempos) which is not the end of the world." More like the end of an era. I think she meant the end of the century because JP2 was the last pope of the 20th c.

ETA: Pope Francis always emphasizes that he is "The Bishop Of Rome", and he is always talking about helping the poor, which is like "feeding the flock" as it says in the prophecy. I guess we'll have to see what unfolds!

You've got me?! Who's got you?!

Benedict has just resigned, and the last Pope can now make his mark

Rather than take the regnal name Peter like Valendrea did in the book, the new pope's real name might be Peter, Pietro or whatever.

Was The Third Secret ever optioned for film rights? I would love to see what Keira Knightley would do with Kate. Also Pope Clement's hometown pen pal could be some unknown Bavarian actress.

I love that book. I read it at least once a year. Have you played the game that goes with it?

Also, have you seen this?

He's got Max von Sydow all right, but he's got him playing Fr. Tibor! That would be cool.
