A 63-year-old man assumes care of a beautiful 21-year-old woman. They live platonically, which increases the sexual tension between them. The young woman falls in love with the old man and proposes marriage to him, saying she will do anything to make him happy.
i thought the same thing upon first watching this - especially considering he wrote it....I thought - nice one! turn this into an old man's dream!
but then on the other hand, his fantasy tended to be his reality (many young girls DID fall in love with him). plus upon further viewing, I can see why Terri fell in love with him. He's charming, aloof, fragile and comes across as kinda 'harmless'.... it's a winning combo for catching a young woman's heart :)
A chat with you and somehow, death loses its sting.....
Didn't Chaplin impregnate a really young girl? I think she was 12? 15? He was a huge star back in his day and young girls did actually throw themselves at him so like you said, the scenario between Calvero and Thereza wasn't that far-fetched. Even today, we often see young women throw themselves at charismatic elderly actors (for example, Jack Nickolson, who btw is overweight and kind of ugly but yet still oozes a strange sex appeal). Calvero was kind, supportive, encouraging. He saved her from a suicide attempt and proceeded to nurse her back to health, both physically and more significantly, mentally/psychologically/emotionally. Perhaps he was the father figure she never had, but it's understandable to see just how/why a young attractive girl like her would ultimately "fall in love" with him.
