What did Lloyd Bridges' character represent?

I thought this character was the most interesting. He was an ambitious deputy who wanted to become sheriff without any of the merit. The scene in which he tries to get Cooper to leave town was very poignant. I felt like he wanted to break Cooper and make a coward out of him. If he accomplished this he could in some way respect himself by showing that even the hero has a breaking point.

Harvey represented punkdom. He wasn't the man Will was so, for some sort of proving himself Will's equal, he took over Will's ex-girl friend. When the girl friend expressed admiration for Will's coming back to face Miller, Harvey couldn't stand it and tried to force Will to leave town. When he couldn't get Will to leave, he sulked in the saloon rather than help him.
