Howard Hawks and John Wayne hated this movie; Clint Eastwood and John Sturges loved it. But what did the king of the westerns, John Ford, think of it?

I actually think that Clint Eastwood's "High Plains Drifter" is an alternative ending for this movie : What would have happened if Gary Cooper had been killed? To my mind, High Plains Drifter is the ultimate western ..
