First of all, just because the actress was 21 doesn't mean the character was. The character may well have been in her twenties and still young by today's standards, but that would have been nearly an old maid in those days. And just because the actor was over 50 doesn't mean the character was. He could have easily been in his forties, and I would have no problem imagining him in his late thirties.
Certainly a town Marshal would have reason to travel. Perhaps he even was called upon in relation to whatever incident caused the death of Amy's father and brother. And if those were her only male relatives, she would have wanted/needed/been encouraged to get married to someone who would take care of her. Again in those days, life as a single woman was particularly difficult and hazardous, as the character Helen demonstrates.
And least that's what movies and novels of the time tell me.
