geriatric actors

So many westerns from this era feature actors that seem too old to be credible in the roles they're playing. Gary Cooper was 51 when this film was made and looked every day of it.

Who would you have preferred to see playing Will Kane? I thought Cooper looked really cool despite his "advanced" age, and I can't imagine anyone better suited for that role.

Why do you assume Kane was far younger than Cooper was back then? To me, Kane was as old or young as Cooper.

The character was an experienced ranger and he was. Never bothered me. And Gary Cooper is a mighty good looking man with that age. So I really don't get this.

Cooper was tall, slender and handsome. And hihgly credible.

If you saw me you'd swear I was in my late 30s, but I'm not.

Would you call me geriatric? I can still do flying side kicks, and jump spin kicks I learned in my martial arts class when I was a teen.

Maybe you need to rethink your position.

reply

Late 40's is more like it.

Tom Cruise is 53...

Cruise couldn't hold a matchstick to Mr. Cooper.

It takes a man to play a man's role.

reply

OP, what are you,12?

The point was that a lot of them were over the hill a few years after they caught the bad guy.

It's that man again!!

In the short story High Noon is based on "The Tin Star," the character's name is "Doane." According to the trivia section here, they changed the name because Katy Jurando couldn't pronounce it. In the story, Doane's age is not given, but he is described as having gout and hands twisted by arthritis. To me, the short story is about a man who wants to retire but stays for one last dangerous job.
