The UK DVD of The Big Sky, from a company called Odeon, has gotten some of the worst reviews for its lousy picture quality I've ever seen (on Amazon UK, amazon.co.uk). I haven't seen it but it sounds too poor to bother with. Check out the reviews and judge for yourselves.

There is a French version I bought which has excellent sound and picture quality, and can be viewed in English without subtitles. Of course, both discs are Region 2 and require a region-free DVD player to watch in the States.

Note: both this and the UK disc are of the 122-minute version of the film, not the uncut 141-minute film. But the shorter version, which was the one that went into general theatrical release afer its original premiere, is quite acceptable.

Hopefully, however, this terrific movie will eventually show up on Region 1 DVD, rendering this debate moot.

I have a French DVD set that has both versions. Unfortunately, it does not have a consolidated version a la "Metropolis", with a good print for most of the film and the cut scenes taken from a 16mm copy and edited back in.
