I think that the reason the ratings for the Today Show have been on a steady decline is that the public has become annoyed with these outrageous salaries such as the $25 million per year earnings that Matt Lauer has secured...
There aren't a lot of common, ordinary folk that can relate to that type of thing and I think people are genuinely turned off and if they're turned off, it's only a matter of time before they tune out...
If The Today Show wants to blame someone, leave Ann Curry out of it because this one's got Matt Lauer written allover it
Actors and Sports stars are in a different league...no pun intended...we expect big salaries from them and I don't think anyone bat's an eyelash anymore when we hear of their deals...
Actually, what I was trying to get across here is that I think when people sit down to find out the news of the day, they want a someone they can relate to, a trusted source and they want to be able to identify with the person giving them that information...Does he really need $25 million a year to deliver a few lines of news every morning? I don't think so...Matt's become too high maintenance with a salary to match...besides that, NBC is coming off looking like they're laying the whole thing on Ann Curry's shoulders which I think makes people turned off even more...
Matt is their so called "star", so if the star can't seem to hold America's attention at the news desk, then they have a lot of nerve trying to pawn it off as solely being Ann's doing...
I think people are switching to ABC because it's got more of a homey and identifiable atmosphere...
Whatever the case is, NBC is now eating ABC's dust
To clarify, I don't watch The Today Show (or Good Morning America for that matter), nor am I a fan of Ann's so I am not talking from a point of being biased towards Ann...and since I have been observing this whole situation from the position of being neutral to both parties, I do believe that my thoughts of what MIGHT HAVE caused their ratings slump actually does hold some merit to it...
If nothing else, we're all entitled to our opinions...
I have been watching the Today Show for 25 years. I started watching in the morning before high school with my father while eating breakfast. I have no idea how much the Today Show anchors make. What is causing me to lose interest is the reporting of celebrity happenings like it is actual news and the rotation of stupid fluff pieces like clothing trends for your pets. It is the same crap regurgitated over and over with current news thrown in here and there for good measure.
