Will you replace Guiding Light with another soap?

I never watched really, from time to time, I guess but I always knew what was going on and respected Guiding Light no matter how rought it got. I keep thinking what soap will go next? Are any of you going to tune into another soap opera to replace Guiding Light? If so, which one?

reply

I've had As the World Turns on deck to replace GL. I used to be a fan of it in the old days. When Dusty was played by Brian Bloom and Meg was played by a lady with some spunk. I loved the farmhouse in those days, it was always bustling with activity. Its not the same show today. I can't stand that Janet and Meg live in the same house but almost never share a scene. I figure it will have to do since I know the characters and don't feel like going into a new soap cold.

reply

ya i have been debating cuz its like i have watched guiding light since i was in the fifth grade and i am now 23.. no other soap is going to measure up to GL. To me, the characters were like family i felt like i knew them all so well. Another soap is like foreign territory, i dunno who anyone is or back stories or anything, but, we'll see. I know its not that hard to catch onto a new soap. I think if i did start watching one it would be All My Children, and thats only because a bunch of GL's characters are on it and it kinda makes it familiar to me.

I doubt I'll pick another one up. I keep up with ATWT...but not like I did with GL...I was in love with Guiding Light...I like ATWT. There's a difference. I too keep wondering which one will go next.

What kind of fresh hell is this?

reply

Y'know Guiding Light was the only soap opera I watched in the last 14 years. I used to like watching Y&R back when Nick and Sharon were first together, but it's been years. I haven't decided to pick up any other soap, not even Y&R. We'll see though, everything is still so fresh with GL ending and all.

No more Soaps for me. GL was the end. Soaps are so awful now. The writing stinks and the plots are ridiculous. Moat of the Soaps have too many young actors who can't act. OLTL has the worst young actors. I watch one day and this I thought this guy was having a stroke, but he was really in the heat of passion. It was very funny.

reply

Thats sad about OLTL, I was thinking of tuning back in now that GL is gone. I just might keep to the last two that I watch and leave it alone.

Nope, just atwt.
b&b is all about brooke and taylor and how many men they can share

and Y&r just drags everything out for SO long! My mom watches that and I swear I can tune in every 5 months and they are still talking about the same crap

Not familiar with anything on ABC

I have tried, really tried to watch AMC. A dance marathon is going on and I've seen the lame dance more. What was the point of going there? Then they have Jessie,Angie & Frankie involved in just flat out bad storytelling. I mean Good Times corny. The actress who played Tammy is a blackmailing hootchie whose obsessed with Frankie and wants to break up his marriage. I can buy the worn out soap plot. But to hear Jessie's family make nonstop stop empty threats to her for the past 2 days. Clearly they aren't going to do squat -she knows it-and I'm sick of hearing it. It's the same as Eb pulling that gun on Holden every 2 seconds on ATWT. I say freakin shoot him or let Holden beat the grits outta Eb.

reply

I've been watching B&B & Y&R. I enjoy them but I miss family oriented stories.

reply

oltl doesnt have bad teens. look at dool their teens are horrible. oltl is the best!

Its quiet... I feel a carly coming on... (knock knock) JASON!!! UHHH

I'm not thrilled about ATWT being my soap now. I often think of Buzz and the gang when I am watching it and how I'd much rather see my GL characters!

reply

Nope.I quit Days of our Lives two years ago for Bold and the Beautiful.

I'll Miss you "Guiding Light". Thanks for a wonderful 10 years.

That was my problem with B&B and Y&R. THey'd drag things out so long that when it finally came time for the payoff I didn't care anymore. And half the time they'd drag stuff out for 3 years and give you no payoff. Even the littlest of things would be dragged out. I stopped watching in 1993 and the Brooke taylor thing was going strong. I can't believe that's still going on now

reply

Nope. I knew that after I watched the last episode of Guiding Light that there would be no more daytime soaps for me.

When I was young (in high school and college,) I would occasionally watch The Young and the Restless, mostly because I had friends who liked it. I was never able to get into it. I never watched a single episode of General Hospital, even when the rest of the country was obsessed with it back in the 80s. I did watch some As the World turns sometimes, only because it came on before GL. I didn't get into it either. (I always did have to wonder why every single character on that show was so preoccupied with Lilly.)

I watched Guiding Light for about thirty years. I did take some breaks when it became too ridiculous. (I didn't watch it for a couple of years due to the whole cloning Reva storyline.) I used to plan my day-off activities so that I could be in front of the TV at 2:00. It odd now, when 2:00 rolls around, to realize that GL isn't in there any more. But, no, no more daytime soaps for me.

reply

I've had it with the networks and the way they treat soaps. I watched Another World until thay canceled it about 10 years ago. Then I started watching Guiding Light and now its canceled. These shows are like old friends. I still miss AW and I'm sure I'll feel the same about GL. Not even Young And Restless is safe.

reply

I've recently watched Y&R...an episode here and an episode there...but I'm just not feeling it. I loved watching Guiding Light and I loved the passion I felt for the characters. There is no one on Y&R or any other soap for that matter that I feel that way about. It truly sucks. I miss GL.

What kind of fresh hell is this?

Done with soaps. I wish there was a place to watch all the old GL shows. With all the cable stations you would think that someone would show reruns of old soaps. I would like to see Edge of Night and GL from maybe starting in the mid seventies. I know it won't happen, but one can wish.

reply

modica,

Your best bet is to find people on-line that are selling that stuff. I epsically want more "Edge of Night" episodes from the 70's, it's my favorite soap, you would think with so many cable channel you would see reruns of soaps, and Soapnet is no damn good. Only soap I watch is AMC which is no wheres near as good as it could be. I watch my old episodes, they are much better.

reply

Soapnet is a joke. Soaps were at their best during the 70's. The 80's changed everything with super couples, remember Luke and Laura, and outrageous stories, a crazy family freezes the world. Give me the shows from the 70's which were character driven, and not so reliant on silly action stories or strange sci-fi. I watch some of the clips of old soaps on youtube and the stories seem so much more interesting. I wish someone would replay the old shows.

reply

No I decided to swear off soaps altogether. Now if a channel can show me old episodes of Guiding Light I am there. I have been a fan since the early 1980's. My favorite couple has always been Quint and Nola. Thank God there is a quint and nola channel on youtube. They are trying to show as much of the storyline as possible and I love watching them. I would be tempted to watch either Young and the Restless or As the World Turns since it seems quite a few of the actors are showing up there. However my life is to busy to tape the shows and then try to watch them over the weekend. I have old tapes to go through and I guess through that and youtube I will have my Guiding Light fix. They need a classic soap channel to show the old shows.

reply

I grudgingly started watching ATWT daily for my soap fixed. Of course now that I am into it, it's been cancelled too. I can't win. May try to get into Y&R before the end of ATWT.
