When the old man actually gets up to try and make a hobbling run for the ship - that is the climax of a great movie. hahaha - seriously, what a wretched soul.

I can't blame him for his attempts to survive, but he was a nasty old soul!
shareWhy is this actor in the wheelchair referred to as an "old man"? He was only 45 years old, and didn't look much older.
The old Doctor who was about 65, had a nerve stopping Stanton going on the ship. That OLD MAN was a very twisted person. I hate him. The character, not the actor.

Maybe I am now not the only one who likes Stanton. He had a valid point on everything (including the fighting that would ensue over the spaceship taking off), plus don't forget he put up all the money.
That crazy Doctor who refused to let Stanton board the ship was an evil and twisted person. Without Stanton, the Doctor's daughter and her fancy man would not have lived.
Some thanks. Grr..
John Hoyt was a fine actor who never got his break. About the closest he got to one was as the granfdfather on "Gimmee a Break", the Nell Carter TV show. 'Member?
shareHe did not put up all the money.
The group that built the ship ran short of money,
and the nasty wheelchair guy put up the rest, just to save his neck.

Stanton was the only realist in the entire movie. He had the correct (and, incidentally, Biblical) read on Man's true nature: that men are inherently evil, not good! That is why he alone could predict what men would do when crunch time came. His non-sentimental and clear-eyed read on humanity made him a 'villain' of course.
For not being a head-in-the-sand idealist like the others--and being smart enough to bring guns!! -- he had to pay.
Also consider that after extended negotiations, Stanton and the scientists agreed on "your money or your life". So by all means he had paid for his ticket.
sharehumans are inherently good though. 98 percent of people are cooperative and law abiding. In disasters people help each other out.
sharehe looked 55 to me, I was shocked he was only 45.

It is a relatively powerful scene. It shows that he really had a strong survival instinct. He is my favorite character of the film, mainly for this reason.

He was cheated. The doc took his money then tricked him.
sharethe government should have shut down the project for ADA violations. the space ship wasn't accessible to the handicapped.
