shareI doubt that Stella would have wanted to compete with Mitch's mother. No wife or girlfriend ever wins that war.
Are you aware that she doesn't leave Stanley in the original play?
The Fabio Principle: Puffy shirts look best on men who look even better without them.
I kind of think Stella goes back to Stanley after the movie ends. In the middle of the movie there's that scene when she's in the house upstairs and Stanley is shouting her name and she comes back down to him. Well at the end she decides to leave him and heads back up to that house with the baby. I feel like the same thing would happen. He'd beg for her to come back and she'd do just that. That's what I imagined when I watched the movie.
shareShe went back to Stanley.
shareInteresting proposal. Even with the play's original ending of Stella remaining with Stanley at that point, it still could have left the possibility of her eventually leaving and perhaps sooner rather than later.
However, I do believe Stella was destined to stick it out with Stanley. Even the end of the movie could still have her eventually going back to him, which I believe she did, even though the code back then was to have "no deed go unpunished," and Stella seemingly triumphantly leaves him.
Sadly, I see her going back, producing several more children with "the ape," and with his increasing violence, undoubted frustration with an ever-growing family meant a dreadful existance. Once his looks faded, I can see Stella not being able to stand anything about him, but staying because "it was her lot in life." (His "wild ways" and sex appeal wouldn't be so attractive when his looks fade and Stella grows up and has children to think about.)
I don't think Mitch would take Stella either, even though he was protective of her. While he knew his options were limited, I think Mitch would still hold out for a maiden (or equivalent of). I'm not sure Mitch would want to take on raising Stanley's child. Mitch ultimately was a good egg but a weakling.
