But why didn't Bruno just kill his father himself? Why this swap killing thing?

He didn't want to murder his father because he (Bruno) had such an obvious motive, which would have made him the prime suspect. The whole point of "criss-crossing" was so that the murders would be committed by people with no apparent connection to the victims.
