The only thing that ever bothered me about this movie

Growing up in Queens, I love the fact that they filmed at the tennis club and showed the neighborhood, but the tennis itself was horrible. It annoys me every time I watch. It's not a huge deal, but could you imagine if this were being filmed in today's movie climate? They would have made Farley Granger train with tennis pros for at least six months!

Don't have to imagine. Just watch the rom-com Wimbledon (2004) with Kirsten Dunst and Paul Bettany. Bettany is equally terrible as a believable tennis player. His form is laughably bad. And with a budget of US$31,000,000. From the trivia section:

"Getting the actors to play professional-looking tennis proved much more difficult than anticipated. Eventually, it was decided to film them performing the strokes and digitally add the ball afterwards."

Even six months of coaching wouldn't suffice to make a convincing tennis player at professional level. The pros have been playing tennis most of their life since they were small children. We're just used to them making it look easy because that's the only time most people watch tennis.

I think that's why they cut back and forth instead of long static shots. You can keep doing takes until it looks good enough.
