What? Wait?

I saw this for the first time and was disappointed.

Guy is married to Miriam who is pregnant, maybe with another man's child. She is jerking his chain about giving him a divorce. This is a problem since Guy, who is already a public figure due to his tennis ability, plans a career in politics. Luckily for Guy's aspirations, his girlfriend Anne is the daughter of a US Senator. WAIT! WHAT! This is 1950, and a crusty US Senator is ok with his daughter carrying on with a married man whose wife is pregnant? That is highly implausible to me. When Guy learns from Bruno that Miriam is dead, he goes to the Morton house where the Senator "tells" him of the murder. It's clear from their behavior in front of the senator that Guy and Anne have more than a passing friendship but nothing is ever said about it. I really don't understand that at all. For those of you not as old as me, this is the sort of scandal that would ruin a senator's career in 1950 and destroy Guy's hope of a politician career.

Did I miss it or . . . where was Guy's family?
