The murder of Miriam. ...spoilers...

Just to over the top.

Killing a woman at a carnival while she is being accompanied by not one but 2 groping men with hundreds of witnesses. That is simply ridiculous!

There are so many ways he could have charmed her and gotten her alone eventually, or forced himself onto her but that was not going to be that time. You can't choke somebody to death in 5 seconds.

reply

Yeah, that was pretty quick. But they appeared to be off by themselves.

Get me a bromide! And put some gin in it!

People didn't pick movies apart back then as we do today + no one really expected that these movies would be seen again after their run in the theatres. No TiVo, DVDs, VCRs etc.
Unless you had that 'thought' mid movie/action, by the time it was over, you'd probably have forgot about just how short the time was. A different world back in the day ....

reply

Yeah when I watched this I remember thinking this too, it was like 'what is he thinking, one of those two guys is going to come around the bush now any second'. But yeah for an old movie, you have to give allowances. In a movie these days though, well plot hole for sure.

I'm writing this signature in bold so people know it's a signature

Hitchcock was not a realist. You have to realize that when watching his films. Suspension of disbelief is often required in varying degrees, and sometimes things unfold absurdly, but he was well aware of this and spoke about it often. He didn't care about whether certain details were "realistic" or not, but more that there was a) significant suspense, and b) a contingent story. In that sense, his films are very self-aware.

Hitchcock loved OTT situations. The holes are there but I can't bring myself to pick holes in that scene. It is a terrific murder. The carnival music in the background. The reflection of Bruno in Miriam's glasses as he strangles her. I don't want to think about plausibility while watching it. It's great stuff.

That was the thrill of the kill, having all those people "somewhere around".

Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...

Walker's magnificent performance makes this Hitchcock's best and without it it is just a good AH film. It doesn't matter what holes exist in the story. Great acting makes up for almost everything. Performing arts are not called that for nothing. BTW, a performance which was absurdly ignored by the academy and the critics.

reply

Right, if you are absorbed in the story and can't turn away, then there are no holes...

The strangling goes on for about 20 seconds.

it's her own damn fault I say. I woke up to the carnival carousel scene, then the popcorn scene, then the boat scene and I thought she was a hyperactive teenager.

20 minutes past that she is dead and the husband is discussing it with his in laws, I was flabbergasted as to why she was with these two horn dogs to begin with.

her own fault.

Oh God. Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more.
