liked this one more than other voters seem to. my one complaint is that its too bad they couldn't maintain the clever planning and writing shown in the first ten minutes of the film.... but maybe that was due to the lingering influence of the film production code..? cant be too specific or it would give away plot points.. /ksf-2
I just caught this one on TCM the other night. I saw Charles McGraw's name in the credits which is good enough for me. I had the same thoughts about how the story unfolded. I was glued to the first part but after the girl gets soft in the knees, declares her love for McGraw and they tie the knot it started to feel flat. She just becomes a worried domesticated housewife after that instead of the steely calculating fatale of the opening scenes. I really wanted to see more conniving in the second half and the way it unfolded with the best buddy basically pulling a confession from McGraw over a few flimsy observations was lame.
I'd like to have seen the girl catch wind of the friend's suspicions and then lure him into a trap to bump him off. In true noir fashion have her shown even more ruthless to the point where McGraw starts to double think his decisions but by then its too late and she's framed him good for the murder and made off with the loot. But with the Hayes code in effect she might have to lose the money on the way to boarding a train, running alongside and tossing the case on board but snagging her fur coat on a some sign near the platform. Have the sign say something ironic like "Stay Clear" or "Hands Off" or "Lose something? Report all lost luggage to the front desk with description of contents"
Given the way the movie started I was not expecting it to go in the direction it did. I enjoy it for what it is but I would have preferred a different ending; not necessarily a happy ending but a better one.
I don't think the production could had anything to do with how the movie turned out. I think what we got is the movie the director wanted to make.
Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]
