Longer version?

The timing for the movie is 166 minutes and 171 minutes. What is more in the longer version? Has anyone seen this?

reply

Old movies are often speeded up a little, so it becomes five minutes faster than what it originally was. But it's hardly noticable when you watch the movies, and there are no scenes missing.

Yes, it's true! IMDB has reached Sweden!

The film was premiered at 186 minutes, road shown (with an intermission) at 171 minutes, and down to 168 minutes for popular release (the version in VHS release). Among cut scenes was one between Nero and Poppaea where he grows suspicious of her inerest in Marcus Vinicius, and the ending was abbreviated: the flowers on the staff of Peter were shown to bloom miraculously. The chorus sang and spoke the words from the gospel of John: "Lord, we know not whither thou goest. Whither I go, ye know, and the Way, ye know." The music is truncated in the cut version, but can be heard in complete form in the MGM record sooundtrack release of 1952.

Do you mention the scene with Poppaea that we can see in the following picture?

I wonder why this scene was deleted. Wasn't it because of the code?

On a tv showing in Sydney this afternoon, a scene where one of the Christians tries to scramble up the wall of the arena to escape the lions, and a couple of lion attacks were missing, and Peter's staff was not shown coming into bloom ... the upside down crucifixion of Peter seemed shorter than I remembered it too. It seems to have been a toned-down for TV version.

But you ARE Blanche ... and I AM.

I think the two times refer to home versions, on PAL Video ALL(99%) films are sped up from the normal 24fps to the PAL standard of 25fps, this is why it is shorter.

I don't know about the longer original release version the other guy speaks of, maybe one day we will see it on DVD.

Thanks for your comments. I think that it is true there were some scenes, music and the words as one of you mentioned. I have seen once a studio still from the movie where there are Nero and Poppaea (Nero's growing suspicion) he is standing behind her and putting his neck on her shoulder - the scene was a reference to DeMille's THE SIGN OF THE CROSS where clearly there is a plot of Poppaea's love to Marcus (also Marcus) and Nero becoming envious.

As for blooming flowers, it might be right because we see them on screen at the end but the focus is more on Christ's words "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life" It might have been longer, I agree.

Curious to see it once... Perhaps on DVD...

Greetings to everyone!

Hi there,
This is great to know.
I have always wondered why a film in the Pal release ran a few minutes shorter.

For what it's worth, the version I saw on TCM ran 174 minutes (give or take a few seconds) from beginning of overture, to end of exit music.
