If this happened today...

George wouldn't have been charged with capital murder. In fact,he probably could get some kind of plea deal. That would ensure that justice would be served and the reputation of the Vickers family wouldn't be soiled by the scandal (even though Angela's name wasn't brought into the trial, she was the "other girl").Anyways, George was responsible for Alice's death and deserved to go to prison.

Disagree. I watch the TLC show Snapped a lot. The series is really about women who kill. But the storylines are very similar to the type of thing that happened in A Place in the Sun. George lured Alice away and killed her.

As for trying to save the Vickers family name, that really wouldn't be a concern of the DA-- especially today.

The story could be like Scott Peterson, who killed his own pregnant wife. He's on Death row now.

But wouldn't this be considered second-degree murder? When she stood up on the boat, he panicked and said "stay where you are!"--It's as if for that split-second, he had a change of heart. They were on that lake all day, so he was obviously stalling. He made no attempt to save her, though, or notify the lake dude there had been an accident. and took off on his car---I was so sure the car wouldn't start?I realize what his intentions were, but it seemed at the last second, he changed his mind.

We only have his word to go on about what happened in the boat. In the trial, George made the mistake of actually talking about his intentions. This is one of the reasons a lot of murder defendants don't act as witnesses. It can backfire badly.

Lawyer: Why did you engage the boat to row the girl out onto the lake?

George: In the back of my mind was the thought of drowning her. But I didn't want to think such things! I couldn't help myself, I couldn't!

The jury had only his word of what his intentions were. The end result is that the girl was dead (and yes, Shelley Winters was annoying as hell. I wanted to crawl through my TV screen and kill her.)

George was clearly an ambitious young man. He set goals and methodically worked to achieve them. At his job, he worked hard during the day. Late at night, on his own, he developed algorithms in production analysis to improve efficiency. This is a person who clearly thinks things through. If the boat capsize had truly been an unfortunate accident, he didn't have to act so guilty-- except that he was guilty.

The jury might have had more sympathy and considered second degree murder if (1) he kept his mouth shut about his intentions; (2) he hadn't engaged in deceptions like using a false name; and (3) he hadn't fled the scene. But all those three things together provide strong indications of premeditation.

You be a desperate, pregnant girl back in those days and lets see how you feel. Yea she could be annoying but, you also have to understand why.

reply

George should have used a condom. Then he could have easily dumped that whining, clinging witch.

Alice Tripp went to that older doctor hoping to get an abortion. The word "abortion" is never uttered of course.

They showed this film on TCM recently, and director George Stevens was quoted as saying Shelley Winters's character was meant to be annoying. To create greater sympathy for Clift's character no doubt. Shelley Winters was very good at playing annoying.

reply

I had little sympathy with him. I felt a little sorry for what he knew he was losing but, he was a cold, cold person. I did not find Alice to be annoying. I found her to be desperate and pathetic, mostly. Angela is who I would feel sorry for but, she is pretty unwise and would probably move on just fine.

You must have had experience with unwed mothers.

True, there is no way he would be executed today, outside some predominantly Muslim countries. Not even in Texas.
