Deborah

This is probably not going to be a popular observation but the Deborah character certainly is...well, predatory. Already suspecting she's pregnant, she faints during an anatomy class and after being helped by Noah, looks after him as though she'd like to eat him alive. Then she practically attacks him in the dairy when he comes to visit her at the farm. Given her behavior, it's no wonder she got knocked up--one wonders if she threw herself at the baby's father as well.

She does come across as entirely flaky. One struggles to see what the doctor sees in her. She's emotionally unbalanced to say the least. However, he seems to value loyalty above all else and that she has in spades - except to the father of her child of course.

The father of her child is dead. In 1951, this woman would have been considered quite hot. Intelligent men have been falling for hot and needy women for some time now.

Great answer! I found her sweet, innocent and charming. Needy? I guess... because she is pregnant which puts you in a vulnerable and needy position. We didn't ask for that role, but that is what nature provides.

Her character did annoy me. She admits that she didn't even know the father of her baby very well and then falls for Noah the first day she meets him (though that day also included her attempted suicide). Not wrapped too tight. Seems the idea was the stability of a husband and home would help straighten her out because after the marriage she is suddenly depicted as this pillar of strength and holds her own against Hume Cronyn. I can't say she and Cary Grant had great chemistry, but you kind of understand how they end up where they do.

reply

You find it weird that she would fall in love with the Cary Grant character, an exceeding compassionate, exceedingly handsome, exceedingly likeable DOCTOR? Oh yeah, that would never happen.

reply

So what if she did?!

"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

reply

Frankly, young beautiful Jeanne Crain could predate me all she wants, I wouldn't be complaining!

She is one of the most unlikable leading ladies I've ever seen. She was not bad looking, but so bossy and unpleasant that it's hard to believe he would fall in love with her so easily.
