Robert Ryan seemed to hate everything about the city. Why did he walk out on the girl in the drugstore? I must have missed something she said.

As I recall, either she or the druggist said that her boyfriend would be angry if he knew that she was getting friendly with a cop. Regardless, Ryan would have probably walked out in disgust anyway based on his state of mind at that point in the movie.

She made some comment about how she wouldn't want to date a cop, and he was already disgusted with the world (including this girl). He wasn`t that interested in her to begin with.

No, I think he WAS interested in her. He swiveled around on his stool with a hurt and disgusted look after her crass remark.
