R.I.P. William Schallert

Very sad to learn of the passing of the great William Schallert, the last remaining cast member from The Man From Planet X, at the age of 93.

In his autobiography To 'B' or Not to 'B', the film's star, Robert Clarke, wrote that Schallert was "as fine an actor as I can name." That was true. Bill Schallert's nearly 70-year career is proof that supporting players and character stars can be as if not more versatile and dynamic in their acting talent than major stars. With some 400 credits, William Schallert was, to our great benefit and enjoyment, almost an inevitable presence in our lives all these decades.

So, farewell, Dr. Mears, for your wonderful villainous role in this highly-praised little film (and for your work in its follow-up production, Captive Women), and for the hundreds of other parts you essayed in films of almost every conceivable genre, and television programs to match. Rest in peace.

This seems to be, as I remember, one of the few roles in which William Schallert was the BAD guy. And he did it so well. He was one of those fine actors that could make you feel comfortable every time you saw him in a film, like seeing an old friend. RIP, Mr. S.
