This is a minor film by most 1950's standards but it is very good. A tight cast with Bridges and Ireland in the leads. Everyone is excellent and it could be placed in the Korean war with a few obvious changes - like "Men in War" with Robert Ryan. I watched this for the first time many years ago.
I agree. Very good indeed by 1951 standards, though, according to Wikipedia, Marie Windsor recalled an executive from Lippert Films announcing the film had run out of money with the production having several pages torn out of the script and the film finishing without certain scenes being done.
I liked some authentic touches: stubbled faces and a mixture of scruffy uniforms (rather than the unrealistic clean-shaven and smart appearance of US Cavalry in many Westerns), and pack-horses and bulky saddlebags (in contrast to patrols featured in other films without any supplies). Excellent characterisation, too.
