Confused about the ending

I saw the 84 min alternate version on TV and I'm confused about the ending. Could someone explain it to me?

There is also an alternate beginning (which starts by the children starting to read the story together).

The movie was originally released without the alternate beginning/endening, but little is known about that (Criterion edition, which produced the DVD, says there is no evidence for the alternate parts to have ever been released to the public, though I saw the alternate endings in the cinema in Israel around 10 years ago).

The little girl said Mama?

Was that her real mom? maybe knocked unconscious but lived?

Her mother was dead. The child was at that moment heartbreakingly alone and devastatingly desperate.

Yes. I believe this is the first time the girl really realizes that her parents have died and are not coming back. Heartbreaking.
