Question regarding Michel and Paulette
Why do you think Michel had an immediate liking or affection toward Paulette?
shareOn top of being the only other person even near his age, Paulette also was a "big city" girl. There are subtle scenes of her sophistication where Michel reacts with a glow in his eyes. I also just think he's an incredibly caring person who stands in contract to the cold and sometimes indifferent family of his. He cares about things to a fault; vandalizes and commits little crimes to see the end result of things (the beauty of the cemetary).
You can also speak more crudely and say he has a crush on her, a puppy-dog crush. Though I think that is being simplistic.

oh they most definitely had a case of puppy love! (pun intended, and sadly irrelevant to French!)
