Wow, this was very sad but beautiful...spoilers of course...

I got tears in my eyes when the girl is running around with the dead dog in her hands. And also, about how lovely the graveyard was that her and the little boy made. Of course, their little bit of happiness couldn't last for long and the girl is taken away.

I felt so sad watching this but after, felt how magical it was, despite the tragicness.

I know there is an alternative ending where the boy and girl find each other, but I didn't know that until I read it here, but I was hoping, just maybe, they would find each other because she took his name.

It makes me feel how good my life is and how I didn't have to suffer as a war orphan.

The comedy was unexpected too, like the fighting between neighbors. You would think with a war going on, they would be nice to each other, I guess it is human nature to bicker.

Unless you know of some other alternative ending, the one that's been unearthed is not that they find each other again. It's that we are shown whole movie is just a story being told by a boy to a girl who are played by the same two children who played Michel and Paulette.
In THAT ending the girl gets upset at the girl's fate so the boy makes up a new ending for her. I thought it was an interesting attempt to try to mitigate the sadness of the story by removing its immediacy.
But it's too obvious and I'm glad it was never used.
