Good writing from the 50s is so funny!
I laughed my ass off watching this film!
The story was so skillfully structured, and yet the dramatic turns revealed such laughably tragic flaws of the presented culture at the time that I nearly fell off my sofa in tears.
From one view, it was a horror show of sexual politics in 1951, and a prime example of the insidious origins of police power corruption. From another, it was a stunning achievement of ensemble filmmaking, with poetic drama, inspired writing, and brilliant, funny, and awesome performances. I was gloriously entertained, and deeply terribly horrified, all at once!
What a great movie!
