I found Klaatu's whole manner arrogant and sanctimonious. Somebody might have said - "What makes you think you could annihilate us? Think we'd go down without a fight?"

I think the point was that it would be the unstoppable Gort doing the annihilating - Klaatu was there to try and steer us from that fate.

My high school football team should have recruited Gort to play linebacker. We would have won every game.

I'd think anyone saying that AFTER having just watched Klaatu arrive in a spaceship technologically advanced enough to render it impervious to all "assaults" using current Earthly science would only be illustrating their limited perspective, and the apparent fact that their perspective was impervious to new information.
