Read the Original Short Story (Link)

Hi all,
For any interested parties, here's a link to the original story, Farewell to the Master (PDF), by Harry Bates. It was published in 1940 in the Oct issue of Astounding Science Fiction (or Astounding Stories, which later became Analog. Bates was their editor in the early 1930s).

It's very different from the 1951 film adaption (and, I assume, the 2008 remake, though I haven't seen it yet). If you love the original adaption and don't want it ruined, stay away from the story. It's very different and has little to do with the 1951 film and I don't want to be blamed for anyone's favourite movie being spoiled! :)

It was also adapted in Worlds Unknown, a short-lived 1970s Marvel publication which adapted such stories (I haven't been able to get my hands on a copy yet, though).
