The Day the Earth Stood Still(1951): The story was so strong and compelling that the film did not require heavy special effects or monsters or violence to be simultaneously hopeful and terrifying.

Yeah! Who the *beep* is Neil Degrasse and why do you write it like he matters??

Because he does matter. He's a world famous American Astrophysicist who's currently hosting the reboot of Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey.

But why didn't they have a more interesting/charismatic astrophysicist do the show? I know they can't get another like Sagan, but come on - this guy??

Shutup. Everyone else except you knows who he is, and he's better than you, so be quiet!

Seek out some of his interviews on YouTube, especially those on The Daily Show and Colbert. He's emerged as a relatable voice in science. And he's always the first to come down on glaring scientific errors in Hollywood movies, so it's nice to see his (favorable) reaction to The Day The Earth Stood Still.

According to his list there at the link you provide, deGrasse Tyson has (mainly and mostly) great taste in movies (though I didn't really like Deep Impact despite Morgan Freeman's appearance in it).

What's funny about his summary of The Day the Earth Stood Still [1951], which I totally agree with, is that even though the film didn't actually require a lot of great VFX, because of the compelling storytelling, it really does have quite very effective VFX anyway. For a film made more than 60 years ago, the VFX are very, very good, never once even now distracting away from the greatness and grandeur of the film.

I'm a big fan of his. I thought it was cool of him and Stephen Hawking to appear on 'The Big Bang Theory'.

I'm not a Tyson fan. I resent his demotion of Pluto. I saw his version of "Cosmos". The original was superior. He is no Sagan.
