Vitameatavegamin - why no Ethel?

I've never seen this mentioned in any of the "Lucy" literature - why doesn't Vivian Vance appear in the classic "Vitameatavegamin" episode? Her partner in crime when she rigs the TV set is Fred, who normally wouldn't go in for such shenanigans.

reply

I've read that Vivian's second husband (to whom she was married while doing ILL) would beat up on her.
Perhaps at the time of the filming of that episode, she was so battered that no makeup could conceal it, and so had to be dropped.

Thank goodness, there are laws today dealing with domestic abuse!

reply

That's so sad. I think she would have nailed this episode.

reply

the good ole days when females could take a punch.

reply

Or maybe that was when see went to Minnesota to get her Gall Bladder out.

reply

while we are on the topic, what was in that bottle, she is pouring something out of the bottle, Id say it looks like honey.

reply

Vitameatavegamin was actually apple pectin - sweet and thick, but not as thick as honey.

reply

you're right honey would have taken too long to pour out of the bottle.

reply

Back then, many medicines or nutritional suppliments were spiked with alcohol or codeine.
Real-life snake oil!

reply

Some still are, especially cough syrups.

reply

If it didn't make you feel better, it got you to the point where you don't care.

reply

To the OP: Fred got into "shenanigans" with Lucy plenty of times. I love Ethel, too, but don't miss her in this.

I've heard there was supposedly a deleted scene at the end of the episode where Ethel shows up and tries to comfort Lucy who's suffering from a raging hangover. And Ethel (apparently not knowing about what had happened) offers her a bottle of Vitameatavegamin.

reply

If so, it sounds like they were smart to cut it.

reply

The exact same joke was actually done later on at the end of Job Switching.

reply

Very true.
