Title song

The name of the tune in the radio broadcast, used at the opening and closing of the show was "The Perfect Song". I believe it was written for the show. It did not have words, and I have never heard the tune recorded by anyone else.
the TV show had another song.

The melody of the show's theme is virtually identical to a very old Christmas tune, ANGELS SERENADE. It's included in the CD, MUSIC BOX MELODIES - VOL. 1 (1987 Telemtry Systems, Inc., P.O. Box 187, WI 53092).

You are right. The song "Angel's Serenade" is the same one that is used on the TV show.
In the reference book "The Big Broadcast" a history of radio from 1920-1950, the theme to Amos and Andy radio show is called "The Perfect Song". Either this was a different song from the TV show or the title is incorrect.
The song is also available on the CD "Television's Greatest Hits Volume 4". Original TV soundtracks. It's labelled "Angel's Serenade".

Don't bother with this CD. Most if not all of the recordings are not originals.

What a haunting song it is, IMO. The whole show looks so old and dated, as if from another century (of course, it IS now).

About 10 years ago, I was priveleged to find a couple VHS copies in a local rental store, and watched them both at least twice. As those tapes having long since disappeared from the store shelf, I'm hoping to buy some DVD's when I can find them. Damm funny show, along with Abbott & Costello and The Honeymooners, that's 50's comedy at its best for me!

You can buy all the shows on DVD at www.thevintageplayhouse.com for a reasonable price.

You don't have to bother with the CD, but you're wrong. The songs are the original versions. If you don't believe that, listen to the song from the TV broadcast then the one from the compilation. They are the same.

We'll have to agree to disagree. Reviewers on Amazon.com also have said not all are originals. Some are, some are not. Angel's Serenade doesn't sound like the original to me. Definitely Bat Masterson and Star Trek on other volumes are not. If you want all originals, this is not the CD for you.

reply

Well, we can agree to disagree, but I have the Amos and Andy shows and I have the song on the CD. As to this song only, they are one and the same, I don't know about the others on the CD. I like to think I'm good at discerning any cover or re-do of songs by the same artist or by others, and I would bet a lot of money on this one.
